Search for heavy long-lived particles in high-energy cosmic rays.

چکیده
We present the results of an experimental'search for energetic particles whicharrive at sea level delayed with respect to the shower front, with an order of magnitude greater exposure than previous experiments. The experiment was sensitive to showers from cosmic rays between I05 and lO7 GeV per nucleus. No evidence for the existence of heavy long lived particles in air showers was found. We set an upper limit to the flux of these particles at the 90% confidence level of 1.4 x lO-12 cm-2sr-ls-l.

Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays from Cosmological Relics
The current status of origin of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) is reviewed, with emphasis given to elementary particle solutions to UHECR problem, namely to Topological Defects and Super-Heavy Dark Matter (SHDM) particles. The relic superheavy particles are very efficiently produced at inflation. Being protected by gauge discrete symmetries, they can be long lived. They are clustering in...
متن کاملInterphase Death of Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells Exposed to Accelerated Heavy Ions
Introduction: Heavy ions are nucleus of elements of iron, argon, carbon and neon that all carry positive electrical charges. For these particles to be useful in radiotherapy they need to accelerated to high energy by more than thousand mega volts. Also the cosmic environment is considered to be a complicated mixture of highly energetic photons and heavy ions such as iron. Therefore, the health ...
متن کاملOrigin and Propagation of Extremely High Energy Cosmic Rays
Cosmic ray particles with energies in excess of 10 eV have been detected. The sources as well as the physical mechanism(s) responsible for endowing cosmic ray particles with such enormous energies are unknown. This report gives a review of the physics and astrophysics associated with the questions of origin and propagation of these EHE cosmic rays in the Universe. After a brief review of the ob...
متن کاملOn heavy Majorana neutrinos as a source of the highest energy cosmic rays
Cosmic ray events beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff represent a great challenge for particle physics and cosmology. We show that the physics of heavy Majorana neutrinos, well defined by their masses, cross sections and lifetimes, could explain the highest energy cosmic rays as a consequence of the galactic annihilation of heavy neutrinos as cold dark matter particles. Galactic nuclei ac...
متن کاملLong-Lived Superheavy Particles in Dynamical Supersymmetry-Breaking Models in Supergravity
Superheavy particles of masses ' 1013 − 1014 GeV with lifetimes ' 1010 − 1022 years are very interesting, since their decays may account for the ultra-high energy (UHE) cosmic rays discovered beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff energy E ∼ 5 × 1010 GeV. We show that the presence of such long-lived superheavy particles is a generic prediction of QCD-like SU(Nc) gauge theories with Nf flavor...
